As we reach the one-year anniversary of living in a pandemic, we are all reflecting on this time. This has been a strange experience for everyone, but for some it has been devastating. Some have lost family members, been sick and unable to work, or even lost their job. The Galveston County Food Bank recently reported that the percentage of Galveston County residents living in poverty has grown to 13.2%. The need for food is soaring.
Our mission at Feed Galveston has always been to provide food for our neighbors in need. We feel more called than ever to get nutritious meals out into the community. Thanks to some generous donations over the last few weeks, we have funded our first Feed Galveston packaging event of 2021! We hope you will join us (for about 2 hours) on Saturday, April 24th between 9:00am and 5:00pm. This event is being held in the Lyceum of Galveston.
We will be packaging 50,000 nutritious servings of food which will be donated to the Galveston County Food Bank. Over the last year we have worked hard to develop practices to keep volunteers safe. We ask all volunteers to wear face masks and social distance work stations. If you haven’t been to one of our events before, click here to learn more about it.
To sign up for a two hour shift please email emily@firstlutherangalveston.com or call the First Lutheran Church office at (409) 762-8477. Shifts are available from:
- 9am – 11am,
- 11am – 1pm,
- 1pm – 3pm, and
- 3pm – 5pm
It may not take all day to package the food, so we recommend volunteering for an earlier shift if you are able.
If you would like to donate to Feed Galveston, please click here. Every $0.33 enables us to buy 1 serving of food.
