i45NOW The Galveston County Food Bank dedicated its new 17,000-square foot warehouse Tuesday.
The facility, the food bank’s second warehouse, is located in a former office supply building in downtown Texas City. The original one a few blocks away is 12,000 square feet.
The opening of the warehouse, 217 6th Street, comes after the Food Bank provided more than 30,000 pounds of food for US Coast Guard members and other federal employees who were either furloughed or working without pay during the month-long federal government shutdown.
Officials said they are preparing just in case the government shuts down again.
Even before it opened the warehouse was put into use storing more than 200,000 pounds of disaster food. Those provisions were sent to flooding areas in central Texas, Rio Grande Valley and to South Carolina. ...

This was a GREAT day! All the volunteers packaged 50,000 meals and were done by 12:30pm! THANK YOU Ball High School Key Club and all volunteers!Together - with our outstanding Community Partners, Ball High School faculty and students, the team from First Lutheran Church who sponsored the FeedGalveston initiative, our in-kind Community Partners and everyone in the community who took the time to "Share Your Holidays" so generously with those in need – we collected 27,000 pounds (and still counting!) of nourishing, non-perishable food items, plus received over $2,000 in monetary contributions – our best year EVER! Are helpful children welcome? I have tried to volunteer elsewhere with my kids before and there was an age requirement. We make homeless bags and pass them out as needed and I think this would be another fun way for us to serve the community.
